30 Nov 09 - Economy: Azoreans have lowest per capita purchasing power in Portugal

A study on municipal purchasing power carried out by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) in 2007 has revealed that the Azores are the region with the lowest per capita purchasing power in Portugal.

The study analyzed 308 Portuguese municipalities and found that only 39 exhibited a per capita purchasing power above the national average, among which the only one in the archipelago is Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, with an index of 112.9

Meanwhile Nordeste, also in São Miguel, ranks 293rd out of 308 Portuguese municipalities.

Two years ago, the autonomous region of the Azores had the lowest per capita purchasing power with an overall index of 83.6, thus placing the Azores at the bottom of all Portuguese regions. Lisbon was at the top with an index of 136.9, 100 being the national average.

In Terceira, Angra do Heroísmo has an index of 90.72, followed by Horta in Faial, Vila do Porto in Santa Maria, Madalena in Pico, Praia da Vitória in Terceira and Santa Cruz das Flores in Flores, with index ranging from 60 to 70.

Higher values are linked to metropolitan areas such as Lisbon and Porto, and municipalities which are heads of administrative districts.

The analysis therefore suggests an association between the degree of urbanization of an area and its purchasing power. por: Kitty Bale
