27 Nov 09 - Football: Santa Clara eyes reinforcements

A month ahead of the transfer season, Santa Clara has already begun looking at possible reinforcements, like midfielder Ryan Maduro, a 23-year old Portuguese-American player from Providence College.

Maduro is on trial with Santa Clara, as in Godwin Antwi.

Ghanaian-Spanish central midfielder Antwi, 21, was born in Ghana and moved to Spain at 14 where he joined the youth setup of Real Zaragoza.

Spotted by Liverpool in 2005 Antwi was offered a contract by the club aged only 17.

He was then loaned out on to several British Football League clubs before being released by Liverpool in June this year.

In 2006, Antwi was called up to train with the Under-19 Youth setup of the Spanish national team.

Santa Clara coach Vitor Pereira says he is keeping a close eye on the progress of these two players.

Although both players are only on trial, Pereira doesn't rule out the possibility of strengthening the team. The coach said that some adjustments could be made within the squad but that he is relying on current players to achieve the club's objectives.

This week, it was revealed that in the first nine days of the Liga Vitalis championship, Santa Clara was the team which had to undergo the most drugs tests, namely on 4 separate occasions.

Only four other teams were tested twice.

However Vitor Pereira's conscience is clear and he has no doubt that his players - and himself - would test negative every single day.

Today, Santa Clara trained for the last time before receiving Beira Mar on Sunday. por: Kitty Bale
