24 Nov 09 - Environment: Algar do Carvão is most visited volcanic cave in the Azores

The Algar do Carvão - in Terceira - is the most visited volcanic cave in the Azores and also the only one which is economically self-sustainable.

With 22,000 people visiting in 2009, the cave now enjoys financial stability and can continue to operate its infrastructure - managed by the association "Os Montanheiros" - even though visitor levels have dropped.

This was one of the findings Frederico Cardigos - Regional Director for the Environment - made today during his visit to Algar do Carvão and subsequent meeting with the directors of association "Os Montanheiros".

With its excellent volunteer work, the association has played an active role in the protection, restoration and promotion of the geological heritage of the Azores.

Also present in the islands of Pico and São Jorge, the association manages the infrastructure in the Gruta do Natal and Gruta das Torres and runs three "ecotecas" (centres dedicated to the promotion and understanding of the local environment) in partnership with the regional government.

The Regional Director of the Environment confirmed the continued support of the regional government to the association as "it is a strategic relation which complements the Government's environment policies with regards to promotion and sustainable use of Azorean nature". por: Kitty Bale
