24 Nov 09 - Culture: Azores to transcribe folk tales recordings

On Nov 27 in Madrid, Azorean Director of Culture Jorge Paulus Bruno will sign an agreement with the Foundation Ramón Menendéz Pidal to gain access to a series of traditional Azorean tales gathered by American researcher Joanne Burlingame Purcell.

Burligame Purcell, who died in 1984, spent two years in the Azores from 1969 to 1971.

The archives, which represent valuable wealth in terms of intangible cultural heritage, contains about 500 stories, most of which have since disappeared. The only traces left are the narratives captured in sound recordings.

In an article published in the Revista Atlântida in 1970, the researcher wrote: "from what I can gather, these great storytellers, who were illiterate had also learned their stories from people who could neither read nor write."

The Public Library and Regional Archives of Ponta Delgada, the Museum of Angra do Heroísmo and the Knowledge Centre of the Azores already hold some of these archives.

The agreement will enable the Regional Directorate for Culture to transcribe the sound recordings and therefore guarantee the preservation and dissemination of this intangible heritage. por: Kitty Bale
